Helen Austin Talbert and Hoyle Talbert

ROCKWELL - Mrs. Helen Rae Austin Talbert, 80, of Rockwell, passed away Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013, and Mr. Hoyle Ray "Shotgun" Talbert, 84, of Rockwell, passed away Friday, Oct. 18, 2013, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Helen Rae was born Nov. 3, 1932, in Stanly County to the late Walter Price and Ottis Eudy Austin. She graduated from New London High School in 1950 and was a Teacher's Assistant for many years at Erwin Middle School, where she was a positive influence in the lives of many children. A member of St. James Lutheran Church, Helen Rae was active in all phases of the church, was a member of WELCA and delivered Meals on Wheels. She never met a stranger and always found pleasure in helping others. Helen Rae enjoyed spending time with her family and was known for the cards she sent to many people.

Shotgun was born July 20, 1929, in Stanly County to the late Claude Ray and Nola Cruse Talbert. He was a 1948 graduate of Albemarle High School, attended Pfeiffer College and was drafted and played Minor League Baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals. He worked as a Depot Agent and retired as a Mobile Agent with Southern Railway and was a former owner of T&R Motors. Also a member of St. James Lutheran Church, Shotgun was a past member of the Church Council and was active with Men in Mission. He was a former Civitan Member, had previously served on the East Rowan YMCA Board of Managers and was currently a member of Keller Memorial Masonic Lodge 657. Shotgun coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball and loved cars and horses.

Helen Rae and Shotgun were married Sept. 9, 1950. In addition to their parents, they were preceded in death by their son, David Ray "T-Bird" Talbert.

They are survived by their daughter, Ann Talbert Eidson and husband Wally of Rockwell; daughter-in-law Gina Talbert of Salisbury; grandchildren Taren Davis and husband Drew, Derek Talbert, Austin Venrick and Kyle Venrick; great-granddaughter Harper Raye Davis; Helen Rae's sister, Gwen Steele of Munster, Ind.; and Shotgun's sister, Monzelle Smith of Southern Pines.

Visitation: The family will receive friends Monday, Oct. 21 at St. James Lutheran Church in Rockwell from 1 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.

Service: The service will follow at 3 p.m. at St. James Lutheran Church conducted by Rev. Craig Sigmon.

Burial will follow at St. James Lutheran Church Cemetery, with Masonic Graveside Rites conducted by Keller Memorial Masonic Lodge.
