Miriam Barringer Clary

SALISBURY -- Miriam Barringer Clary, 85, of Salisbury, passed away Friday, March 19, 2010, at Rowan Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health and seriously ill for five weeks.

Miriam was born along with her identical twin sister, Marie Barringer Cuthrell, on July 28, 1924, to the late parents, Mr. Calvin Brown Barringer and Mrs. Myrtle Katie Elizabeth Fisher Barringer. Her mother was part of the Brown-Fisher families.

Miriam was a graduate of the Boyden High School Class of 1941 and was a post graduate of Boyden High School Class of 1942. She also attended Rowan Technical College, now Rowan-Cabarrus College.

She was a life member of the former Evangelical and Reformed Church now known as the First United Church of Christ, located at 207 W. Horah St. Salisbury, a former member of the Polly Holshouser Junior Philathea Class. She was also a life member of the Brown Fisher Association.

She was earlier in life employed as Deputy Register of Deeds in Salisbury.

Miriam served her church in many capacities, especially involving children, which was her pride and joy.

Miriam and Marie were very highly involved in many ways of improving the Park Avenue area, which they had been born in that area of the city, especially after the loss of their good neighbors the late B.P. Tutterow couple and their children.

Miriam was a member of SNAG-Salisbury Neighborhood Action Group. The city of Salisbury and the Police Department got highly involved after the sought help in improving the Park Ave. area. Later the Park Avenue Redevelopment Corporation was founded which they became highly active in. Marie was the first Secretary of the corporation and with the fine leadership of Lou Manning, they along with other Board members, friends and members of the community and churches, they have made many improvements in the Park Ave. area.

To their family and friends, Miriam and Marie were known as the "M&M 's", and the "Angels of Park Ave.".

Survivors include her beloved husband, James "Jim" Clary, whom she married on Nov. 21, 1947. They shared 62 years of happiness; her special son, James "Jay" Brown Clary, who was born March 29, 1954, in Salisbury; her twin sister, Marie Barringer Cuthrell, other sister, Catherine Barringer Kimball (John); and her late sister-in-law, Mary Ruth Barringer (John). Other survivors include a niece, Libby K. Holman (Lee); nephews, Tommy Kimball (Carlee), Alan Barringer (Jeannie), Kim Barringer (Connie); great-nieces, Andrea B. Venus (Scott) and their son, Cole, Christine Barringer, Sara J. Barringer, Melissa Barringer, Michelle Kimball Powers (Jamie) and their children, Avery and Blankley; great-nephews, Chad Barringer of Faith; and a number of cousins, especially, Dr. Elmer and Juanita Lagg and other special friends of the church and community.

Service and Visitation: A graveside service will be held Monday, March 22 at 11 a.m. at Chestnut Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Michael Childress, pastor of First United Church of Christ, officiating. The family will speak to friends and family following the service.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers and what was requested by Miriam, memorials can be made to First United Church of Christ 207 W. Horah St. Salisbury, NC 28144, or Relay For Life of Rowan County-American Cancer Society Attn: Frances Morris 1103 Burkesway Dr. Salisbury NC 28146, in which she was deeply interested in.

The Clary family wishes to thank the Staff of Rowan Regional Medical Center and the Staff of Autumn Care of Salisbury and Hospice for all the loving care of Miriam and her family and many thanks to all her other friends, who helped her family during her life and illness. She was loved by all who knew her and her many acts of kindness she gave to others.
