FORMER N.C. REP. ALMOND DIES AT 68
Even after Ellis Almond retired as a U.S. marshal, he couldn't leave government service far behind.
He made an unsuccessful run for Stanly County sheriff in 1978. And in 1980, the Stanly County Republican Party tapped Mr. Almond to succeed N.C. Rep. Otha Carter, R-Stanly, who died while in office.
Mr. Almond won the general election in November 1980 to the 32nd district seat which he held until 1982, at the same time serving in a variety of other positions at his church and in local government.
Pearson Ellis Almond, World War II Navy veteran and criminology instructor at Stanly Community College, died May 8, 1994, at home. He was 68.
An Albemarle native, Mr. Almond was appointed U.S. marshal by then-President Richard Nixon and also served with the Albemarle Police Department and as a game warden and federal fish and game officer. He was an auctioneer and co-founder of Al-Cart Corporation.
He was a member of the Centralina Council of Governments and served on the board of First Union National Bank. A Pfeiffer College graduate, he taught Sunday school and was a member of the administrative board, trustees and choir at Salem United Methodist Church.
Mr. Almond's funeral is 2 p.m. Tuesday at Salem United Methodist Church. Visitation is 7 to 9 tonight at Hartsell Funeral Home.
Survivors are his wife, Betty; sons, Terry Almond of Richfield, Mark Almond of Mount Pleasant, N.C.; daughters, Mrs. Marilyn Tucker of Mount Pleasant, Miss Paula Almond of Charlotte; mother, Mrs. Ada Almond; brother, Larry Almond of Norwood; sisters, Mrs. Faye Shepherd of Greensboro, Mrs. Shelby McSwain of Norwood, Mrs. Ramelle Cooper; five grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Stanly County, 620 N. 1st St., Albemarle, N.C. 28001; or to Salem United Methodist Church cemetery or building fund, 20987 N.C. 73, Albemarle, N.C. 28001.
