Robert Luther Shaver

ASHEVILLE Robert Luther Shaver, 85, died Thursday, March 25, 2004, at his residence. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Jubliee Community Church in Asheville.

A native of Stanly County, he was the son of the late Rueben and Dovie Morgan Shaver and husband of 59 years to the late Jane Yerby Shaver, who died in 2001. He was also preceded in death by a son, James Calvin; and siblings, William Reatha Shaver, Leslie Shaver, Collie Banks Shaver and Virginia Shaver Cook.

Mr. Shaver was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and after a lifelong career in construction as superintendent, he retired as a vice-president. He was an active 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and a member of the Oasis Shrine Temple for more than 50 years. Mr. Shaver was also a member of the West Market Street United Methodist Church in Greensboro.

Surviving are two daughters, Kathy Shaver of Washington, D.C., and Jean Shaver Karpen and her husband, Joe, of Weaverville; two sons, David Shaver and his wife, Elizabeth, of Swannanoa and Larry Shaver of Greensboro; three brothers, Delma Shaver of Swannanoa and Piedmont, S.C., Calvin Shaver of Richfield, Dewey Shaver of Salisbury; and five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends after the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mountain Area Hospice, Asheville, NC; or one's favorite charitable organization.
