Elmer Harold Lester

Elmer Harold Lester, 89 of Gold Hill passed away at his residence on January 15, 2016 after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease with his loving family at his side.

He was born on May 12, 1926 in McDowell County, WV the son of the late Alexander Lester and the late Princess Rowe Lester. He graduated form high school in West Virginia. He joined the navy in 1943 where he served on the island of Okinawa during World War II and aboard the destroyer USS Storm during the Korean Conflict. Later he served aboard the USS Corrigedor and the USS Catawba. He had Shore Duty in Norfolk, VA; Riviera Beach, FL; Atlanta, GA; Naples, Italy; and Ankara, Turkey. He retired from the navy in 1966 after 20 years of service and worked for Fiber Industries for 18 years before retiring in 1982.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Rockwell. Prior to his transfer of membership, he was a member of Main Street Methodist Church in Salisbury. While at Main St. Methodist, he held several positions in the church; Chairman of the Administration Board, and was Church treasurer. He was also an avid gardener.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother; E.C. Lester and a sister; Phyllis Blankenship.

Survivors include his wife Norma Jean Hill Lester who he married on May 11, 1955. Daughter; Leigh Anne Lester Ragan (Otis) of Gold Hill and Niece; Carol Sue Stewart of Canal Winchester, OH.

The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 pm on Sunday January 17 at Powles Staton Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00pm on Monday January 18 at Powles Staton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev Matthew Laughter, Pastor of First Baptist Church Rockwell officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the US Navy Honor Guard and the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard.
