Banks Ray Barringer

ROCKWELL - Mr. Banks Ray Barringer, 86, of Rockwell, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014, at North Carolina State Veterans Home in Salisbury.

He was born March 18, 1927, in Rowan County to the late Albert Sidney and Martha Genevia Miller Barringer.

Banks graduated from Rockwell High School and attended Salisbury Business School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in World War II.

Banks retired from Superior Oil and was a member of Grace Lowerstone Church, where he was named Elder Emeritus in 2009 and was active in many other roles, including Sunday School Superintendent, Consistory president and the George Poole Brotherhood.

He was a member of Miller-Russell Legion Post 112, where he served as commander and treasurer. Banks helped initiate Rowan County American Legion Baseball and served as team manager and athletic director. In 1996, he was inducted into the American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame.

Banks served as chairman of Rockwell Planning Board from 1993 to 1998; and was a Mason and an Oasis Shriner.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Edna Marie Kasten Barringer, who passed away Feb. 22, 2008; five brothers, Ross, Berry, Glenn, Hubert and Luther Barringer; and two sisters, Ruby Rimer and Katherine Cruse.

Banks is survived by two sons, Dr. Michael "Mike" Barringer and wife Paula of Shelby and Randall "Randy" Barringer of Savannah, Ga.; daughter Wanda Kluttz and husband Steve of Salisbury; four grandchildren, Jonathan Barringer of Denmark, Julie Johnson and husband Eric of Charlotte, Jennifer Ludwick and husband Brian of Salisbury and Bryan Kluttz of Morrisville; and three great-grandchildren, Ryan and Katelynn Johnson and Presley Ludwick.

Service: The funeral service will be held Saturday, March 1, at 2 p.m. at Grace Lowerstone Church in Rockwell, conducted by Rev. Spencer Swain. Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard and the NC National Guard.

Visitation: The family will receive friends prior to the service Saturday, from 1 to 2 p.m., in the sanctuary at Grace Lowerstone.
