SALISBURY - Sidney Ray Bernhardt, 82, of Salisbury, died Monday, Aug. 24, 2009, at the Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks.

Born July 30, 1927, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Sidney H. and Delma Cruse Bernhardt. He was educated in Rowan County schools and graduated from Granite Quarry High School in 1944 and watch repair school in Spencer. He also attended Lenoir- Rhyne College. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, serving during World War II and in Germany.

Mr. Bernhardt was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 36 years and was a Supervisor at the time of his retirement. He later was employed at Rowan Regional Medical Center for 11 years in the Security Department.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Adult Sunday School Class 4 and was active in the Men's Group and Choir. Mr. Bernhardt was a former member of the Peeler-Livengood-Wood American Legion Post.

Mr. Bernhardt was preceded in death by his wife, Sue Kluttz Bernhardt, on April 11, 2008.

Survivors include his daughters, Suzanne B. Wellman and husband Stephen W. of Stafford, Va., Raynette B. Edge and husband Ken of Key Largo, Fla.; son Tony W. Bernhardt and wife Annette of Pfafftown; and five grandchildren, Christopher Stephen Wellman of Wilmington, Timothy Ray Wellman and wife Megan of Stafford, Va., Jessica Sue Wellman of Stafford, Va., Alicia Gail Bernhardt and Michelle Renae Bernhardt of Pfafftown.

Service: A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with the Rev. William S. Ketchie officiating.
