William Sidney 'Sarge' Collins

CHINA GROVE - Mr. William Sidney "Sarge" Collins, 75, of China Grove, passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2014, at Carolinas Medical Center-Northeast in Concord surrounded by his loving family.

Sidney was born April 15, 1937, in Rowan County, the son of the late William H. Collins and Elizabeth Luther Collins. He graduated from China Grove High School in 1957 and was married to the late Phyllis Peeler Collins for 53 years.

Mr. Collins is survived by a daughter, Pamela Efird (Joel) of Rockwell; sons Richard Collins (Andora) of Rockwell, William S. (Bill) Collins Jr. of China Grove; four grandchildren, Becky, Jessie and Amy Efird and Chad Collins; and brother Max (Terry) Collins of Lowell.

In addition to his loving wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.

He was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in China Grove and loved his church family very much.

Sarge served more than 20 years in the United States Army, retiring at the rank of Sergeant First Class on June 25, 1980. He was a Vietnam veteran and also served two tours in Germany, one as as an adviser in Iran, as well as various posts throughout the United States. His decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal (6th award), National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.

After his illustrious military career, he went to work for the North Carolina Department of Corrections, retiring as a vocational instructor after more than 20 years of service. He then continued to serve his community as a school bus driver for 10 years in the South Rowan Community. He supported and was active in many veterans service organizations. He was a lifelong member of VFW Post 8989 in Kannapolis and VFW Post 9089 in China Grove, where he served as Post Sr. Vice Commander from 1994-1995.

Arrangements: Visitation will be on Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home in China Grove with funeral on Monday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in China Grove with Rev. Steve Wilson, minister. Burial will follow at West Lawn Memorial Park with military rites performed by Rowan County Honor Guard.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Missions Fund, China Grove, NC.
