Vernon Leroy Lanning
ROCKWELL -- Vernon "Stuffy" Leroy Lanning, 77, Rockwell, died Thursday (March 28, 2002) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.
Born May 19, 1924, in Davidson County, Mr. Lanning, a son of the late Walter and Carrie Clement Lanning, was educated in the Rowan County schools. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army in Patton's 737th Tank Battalion.
Retired from N.C. Finishing Co., he worked in the finishing department. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church and a former member of Smith Grove Baptist Church, Churchland.
His first wife, Kathleen Peeler Lanning, died Sept. 11, 1991.
Survivors include wife Lessie D. Lanning, whom he married April 19, 1993; daughters Vicky Peace, Trinity, and Grace Drye, Rockwell; brother Freddy Lanning, Lexington; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Faith Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Chuck Brawley and the Rev. Gary Bodford. The body will placed in the church at 10:30. Burial, Smith Grove Baptist Church cemetery, Churchland.
Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Powles Funeral Home.
