ROCKWELL - Clyde Aaron Barringer, 82, of Rockwell, passed away March 10, 2009, at Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast, Concord.

Mr. Barringer was born in Rockwell May 26, 1926, the son of the late Luther C. Barringer and Pearl Sides Barringer. Clyde graduated from Rockwell High School in 1943 and attended Salisbury Business College for one year.

He retired in 1991 as a cabinet maker from Sides Lumber Company. He was the last charter member of Rockwell Lions Club with 55 years of service, also serving as treasurer.

He was a lifelong member of St. James Lutheran Church and was Sunday School treasurer.

Mr. Barringer was on the Town Board of Rockwell from July 1969 to December 2000. He was the longest serving alderman for the Town of Rockwell and also served as Mayor Pro-Tem. He was a member of the Rockwell City Fire Dept. for 36 years, from July 1945 to May 31, 1981. He also served as assistant chief for several years and served as secretary/treasurer from 1981 to 2007. He also served on the Rockwell Planning board from 2000 to 2007.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Tamara Efird; a great-grandson, Gavin Moose; and a sister, Doris Lynette Barringer.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. June Miller Barringer, whom he married May 11, 1946; and three daughters, Shelia Efird of Gold Hill, Luann Phelps and husband Freddy of Rockwell and Karen Wilson and husband Carlton of Richfield. A sister also survives, Laura "Jane" Deal, also of Salisbury. Five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren also survive.

Service: Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 12 at St. Peters Lutheran Church conducted by the Rev. Craig Sigmon, pastor of St. James Lutheran Church, with burial in St. James Lutheran Church Cemetery. Rockwell Lions Club and Rockwell City Fire Department will be seated as groups.

Visitation: The family will receive friends at Powles Funeral Home from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, and will be at the residence the remainder of the time.

Memorials: May be sent to St. James Lutheran Church, Building Fund.
