Ernest Ray Hoffner

Ernest Ray Hoffner, 90, of Gold Hill, passed away Wednesday, February 24, 2021 at NC State Veteran's Home in Salisbury.

He was born January 24, 1931 in Rowan, NC to the late Lee and Lena Owens Hoffner. Ernest attended Rockwell High School; he was aUS Army Veteran serving as a paratrooper in the Korean War. Ernest was a truck driver, heavy equipment operator and farmer. He retired from the City of Salisbury as a Master Mechanic.

Ernest volunteered for many years at Liberty Fire Department helping to make chicken and dumplings and at the Denton Farm Park annual Wheat Thrashing on the Handy Dandy Railroad train.

Ernest was a lifelong member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church. He loved being outdoors and tinkering in his shop. Ernest was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather to Taryn and Aubrey who always brightened his days, he was a loyal and faithful friend.

In addition to his parents, Ernest was preceded in death by his first wife, Neola Rogers Hoffner, brother, Curtis "Bud" Hoffner, sisters, Mary Jane Ward, Johnnie Earnhardt, Jean Brown, Velna Carrick, Arlene Morgan, Annie Hall and Blanche Gobble.

Ernest is survived by his wife Judy Eller Hoffner; daughter, Amy Hoffner Shaver and husband Tim of Salisbury; grandson, Adam Shaver and wife Donna of Salisbury; great-granddaughters, Taryn and Aubrey Shaver; step-sons, Stanley (Priscilla) Stiller and wife Priscilla, and Mark Stiller and wife Cristy; step-grandson, Justin Stiller; step-granddaughter, Kristin Stiller; sisters, Edna Mahaley and husband Al of Kernersville, and Helen "Sis" Stiller of Salisbury; sister-in-laws, Peggy Hoffner, and Elva Huneycutt; brother-in-law, John Eller; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

The family will greet friends and relatives on Sunday, February 28, 2021, 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church Family Life Center, Salisbury, NC.

The funeral service will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, February 28, 2021, in the St. Matthew's Lutheran Church Family Life Center, Salisbury, NC, with Rev. Bill Ketchie, officiating.

Burial will follow in the St. Matthew's Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. Matthews Lutheran Church Sanctuary Renovation Fund.

The family would like to give a special thank you to the NC State Veteran's Home staff for all the love, kindness and care given to Ernest.
