Notes for George William Bostian
George William Bostian

MOORE COUNTY - George William Bostian, 65, of Moore County has passed away.

Mr. Bostian was born on Oct. 4, 1943, in Salisbury. He lived in Granite Quarry, throughout childhood, graduating from East Rowan High School in 1961.

Mr. Bostian was proud of the five years he spent as a teen delivering the Salisbury Post in Granite Quarry. This provided him with valuable training which followed him throughout his life.

Mr. Bostian enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1962 and was honorably discharged in 1966. He later attended Central Piedmont Community College and The University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

In 1983, he bought an Osborne personal computer and taught himself to use it. In January 1984, he was asked to teach a software class at brand-new Queens Compute, the personal computer training center at Queens University in Charlotte. Mr. Bostian remained there full-time for four years, training more than 5000 area businesspeople on a wide variety of software programs. Before retiring in 1998, he was a self-employed trainer/consultant and technical writer/editor.

For many years, he sang in the choir and played tambourine at Seigle Avenue Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. After moving to Moore County in 2004, Mr. Bostian became an active member of Christ Episcopal Church in Albemarle. He joyously served on the Worship Committee and was a lector, intercessor and acolyte.

Energized by watching the 1968 Democratic Convention on television, he became active in Democratic Party politics in Charlotte in 1972 and remained so into later retirement in Moore County. He served as precinct chair, member of the County Executive Committee, and delegate to numerous county, district, and state conventions; and he worked behind the scenes on numerous campaigns. It was his fondest wish to live long enough to vote in the recent presidential election, and he was delighted with the results.

Mr. Bostian is survived by his wife of 26 years, Katherine M. "Katie" Dunlap; his mother, Margaret Wain Bostian Weant of Granite Quarry; and his beloved dog, Nugget. He is survived by his "designated sister" Ruth Kelly Curtis and her husband, James Curtis and their daughters, K.K. and Helen, of Charlotte; close friends, Jeanne-Marie Thomasson and Peter Toy and their adult children, Caroline Toy and Geoffrey Toy of Norcross, Ga., Will and Natalie Connor and their children, Zoe, Oz and Mentamer, of Charlotte; and countless other friends, both recent and of long standing.

Mr. Bostian was truly blessed to have a large number of good friends, plus more than a dozen godchildren and honorary godchildren who enjoyed spending time with their "Uncle George" and will treasure his legacy.

Mr. Bostian was predeceased by his father, William R. Bostian, Jr. and his "dog-daughter" Sassy.

Mr. Bostian's interests included entertaining friends for long weekends at home; the beauty and mystery of nature; all God's woodland creatures; music; humor; writing letters to the editor; and word games. Clever, inventive, and creative, he could fix anything that broke. He could make many things work better than intended.

Visitation: Visitation will be held at the family home on Nov. 16.

Service: Funeral services will be held at Christ Episcopal Church in Albemarle on Monday, Nov. 17, at 1 p.m. Father James Bernackie and Rev. Gus Feathers will officiate. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Men's Beach Group: Eric Anderson, John Culligan, Fred Culpepper, Frank Fortner, Dan Faris, David LaBounty, and Dick Stenhouse of Charlotte; Don Baker of Hilton Head, Henry Underhill of Seattle, Wash., Arny Pickholtz of Boynton Beach, Fla., Duncan Ballantyne of Stuart, Fla. and Mike Werner of Wilmington. Over the past several decades, this group has spent 56 weekends together at the beach.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to donate blood to the American Red Cross in memory of Mr. Bostian or to send donations to the stained glass window fund established in his memory at Christ Episcopal Church, Albemarle, NC..

Phillips Funeral Home is assisting the family.
