Margaret Wain Bostian Weant

SALISBURY - Margaret Wain Bostian Weant, died Monday, June 10, 2013, at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center, following an illness of several months.

She was born in Granite Quarry on May 17, 1920, the sixth of seven daughters of English immigrants George and Mary Ann Mead Wain. She was a lifelong member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church.

A graduate of Granite Quarry High School and Catawba College, she was a star basketball player (#3, "Ace" Wain) and tennis player. Her zest for the game of basketball never diminished.

She taught first grade at Faith and Granite Quarry schools for 30 years, serving as Assistant Principal at Granite Quarry for five years. She founded and taught a preschool class at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in the early 1950s.

A member of Delta Kappa Gamma professional organization for teachers, she served on a number of committees for Rowan County Schools. After her retirement from teaching, she served on the Granite Quarry Planning Board and ACT, a community improvement committee. She was a champion for the well-being of children and animals.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William R. Bostian Jr., in 1967; their son, George W. Bostian; son-in-law Grover L. Medley; and her husband, William W. Weant, in 2003.

Survivors include her daughters, Margaret B. Medley (Nan) of Salisbury, Jane B. Arant and husband John of Rock Hill, SC; granddaughters Catherine Bostian of St. Petersburg Beach, Fla., Andrea Bostian of Plantation, Fla., Margaret Arant Franklin (Kyle) of Clinton, S.C.; grandson William Arant of Rock Hill, S.C.; four great-grandchildren; and 20 nieces and nephews.

Her extended family also includes Mr. Weant's brother, Robert Weant of Whispering Pines and his wife Nancy; sons Bobby E. Crouch of Mount Pleasant, S.C., John Crouch and Richard Crouch (deceased) and their families; and her daughter-in-law, Kathryn Dunlap of Star.

Service: A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 13 at St. Luke's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Whayne Hougland will officiate. Interment will follow at Rowan Memorial Park.

Mrs. Weant will lie in state at Summersett Funeral Home until time to be taken to the church for the service.

Visitation: The family will receive friends in the church parish hall following the interment.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials may be sent to Rowan Community Care Clinic, 315 G Mocksville Ave., Salisbury, NC; or St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 131 W. Council St., Salisbury, NC.
