Notes for Gary James Smith
Gary James Smith

Gary James Smith, also known as PeePaw to five grandchildren, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 7, 2022 at the age of 75.

Born in Albemarle, North Carolina on February 6, 1947 to the late Laura Eudy Smith and Coy James Smith of Locust. He graduated from West Stanly High School in 1965. Pursuing his interest in mechanics, Gary went on to attend Nashville Auto Diesel School where he graduated in 1966 with a degree in Auto Diesel Technology. His love for mechanics allowed him to kickstart a 55 year long career as a mechanic and service manager in the heavy equipment industry and pursue his hobbies with tractors and classic cars.

Drafted into the Army at the age of 20 in 1967, Gary was stationed in multiple locations around the United States and Germany. Upon discharge from the Army, Gary returned to Locust and married his late wife, Nancy in 1969. Gary and Nancy were married for nearly 30 years and went on to have two sons, Tracy and Terry. Gary’s dedication and love for Nancy continued during her lengthy battle with cancer and this devotion and commitment to the family still continues to this day with his children, grandchildren, and those he loved.

Anyone who knew Gary, knew he never met a stranger and was a self-proclaimed comedian. His ability to talk to literally everyone of all ages, allowed them to see Gary’s distinct smile and quirky sense of humor. Most often the conversations would revolve around NASCAR, cars, trucks, tractors, his grandchildren or his dog, Daisy. When Gary wasn’t working, he enjoyed tractor pulls, eating chicken and dumplings, drinking diet Pepsi and spending time with family and friends. A devoted husband, father and friend will surely be missed, but we know we will see him again someday.

Gary was preceded in death by his loving wife, Nancy Page Smith and his parents. He is survived by his son Tracy, his wife Michele and their two children - Jordan and Aiden - all of Stanfield; and his son Terry, his wife Mary and their three children - Bryson, Caden and Rylee - all of Harrisburg. Other survivors include his brother Graylon, his wife, Sherry, nieces, nephews, brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws and his special friend Phyllis.

The family wishes to thank Gary’s neighbors, family, and the numerous friends Gary has made throughout the years.

The family will be receiving friends on Saturday, June 18, 2022 from 9:30 am to 10:45 am. The visitation and celebration of life will be held at Red Cross Baptist Church, 112 W Red Cross Rd, Oakboro, NC. The funeral will be at 11:00 am in the church sanctuary and burial to immediately follow in the cemetery. There will be an opportunity to visit with the family in the fellowship hall following the service.

In lieu of flowers, people wishing to honor Gary’s lifelong commitment to family and community can make donations to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in honor of his grandson, Bryson.
