Notes for Nancy Burnette
Nancy Burnette Stanback

Nancy Burnette Stanback died peacefully in her sleep on July 29, 2021, surrounded by her three children and the powerful love and support of her three step-children and her ten grandchildren who were unable to be with her at the time of her death.

Nancy was born on October 20, 1939 to Percy and Charlotte Burnette and was a native of Norfolk, Virginia. She attended Randolph Macon Woman’s College from 1957-1959, then transferred to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, from which she graduated in 1961.

Nancy was a philanthropist and often used her donor-advised account at the Foundation for the Carolinas for making charitable gifts. On the local level, Nancy was a big supporter of the Salisbury Symphony, the Bell Tower Green, The Community Care Clinic, Rowan Helping Ministries, Piedmont Players and the Lee Street Theater. She was a supporter of Catawba College, Livingstone College, the Hood Theological Seminary and Brevard College, where her late husband, William (“Bill”) Stanback, was on the Board of Trustees for many years.

Nancy was a big supporter of the North Carolina Nature Conservancy, the Coastal Land Trust, Three Rivers Land Trust, the Coastal Federation, Audubon North Carolina and the Southern Environmental Law Center.

Nancy also supported St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and the First United Methodist Church in Salisbury.

In April 2021, Nancy was honored with the Key to the City of Salisbury by Mayor Karen Alexander and the Salisbury City Council. At the same time, she was presented with a resolution from the Rowan County Board of Commissioners honoring her for her dedication, commitment and contributions to her community.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Percy Preston Burnette and Charlotte Danner Burnette, and her beloved husband, William Charles (“Bill”) Stanback. She iis survived by her three children: Mary Hart (Frank), John Hart, Jr. (Katie), Charlotte Hart Scudder (Doug), her three step-children whom Nancy loved like her own: Anne Stanback (Charlotte Kinlock), John Stanback (Megan) and Mark Stanback (Nancy Popkin), and her ten grandchildren, Guthrie Stanback, Clement Stanback, Soren Stanback, Will Zemp, Chad Zemp, Jackson Zemp, Gray Stanback, Sylvie Stanback, Saylor Hart and Sophie Hart.

Nancy cherished her many friendships in Salisbury, North Carolina and beyond, and she especially enjoyed sitting with friends on her front porch, enjoying great conversations and listening to the songs of the cardinals and the towhees.

A private Memorial Service will be held for the family.

In lieu of flowers, Nancy requests that memorial donations be made to Shelter Guardians, Faithful Friends Animal Sanctuary, or to The Historic Salisbury Foundation, all of Salisbury, NC.

Summersett Funeral Home is serving the Stanback family.
