Notes for William Charles “Bill” Stanback
William Charles (Bill) Stanback

Devoted husband, loving father, philanthropist and former Salisbury, NC mayor, William Charles (Bill) Stanback died on February 7th at age 95. A World War II veteran who served in the U.S. Navy, Bill was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and earned an MBA at Harvard University. With his cousin, Fred Stanback, he was the owner of the Stanback Headache Powder Co., which also made Chap-et lip balm.

Bill devoted his life to service and was an active member and leader in numerous community organizations including, Kiwanis Club of Salisbury, First United Methodist Church of Salisbury, Livingston College Board of Trustees, and the Brevard College Board of Trustees. Bill was honored by induction into the North Carolina Order of the Long Leaf Pine.

Throughout his 95 years, he maintained his passion for so many things, most notably sailing, birds, hiking and a great love of the natural world and land conservation.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy; brother, Tom Stanback of Larchmont, NY; children, Anne Stanback (Charlotte Kinlock), John Stanback (Megan), Mark Stanback (Nancy Popkin) and step children, Mary Hart (Frank Mocase), John Hart (Katie), and Charlotte Hart Scudder (Doug); and ten grandchildren. Bill’s first wife, Betty Anne Ragland Stanback, passed away in 1977.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First Methodist Church, Salisbury, NC; St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Salisbury, NC; or Shelter Guardians, PO Box 1934, Salisbury, NC, the organization raising money for a new building at the county animal shelter.

A memorial service will be held at the Omwake-Dearborn Chapel at Catawba College on Sunday, February 11th at 2pm. A reception will be held at Catawba’s Peeler Crystal Lounge following the memorial service.
