Notes for Delmar Louvern “Sam“ Misenheimer
Delmar 'Sam' Misenheimer

SALISBURY - Mr. Delmar Louvern "Sam" Misenheimer, 89, of Salisbury, passed away at his residence on Sunday, May 19, 2013. Mr. Misenheimer was born on June 11, 1923, son of the late Francis Delmar Misenheimer and Carrie B. Trexler Misenheimer.

Mr. Misenheimer attended Morgan Elementary and Rockwell High School. While at Rockwell High School, he was a bus driver. He was a life-member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Salisbury; a member of Good News Sunday School Class at St. Matthews Lutheran Church; a previous member of the Church Council for St. Matthews Lutheran Church; a previous Scoutmaster for Boy Scouts at St. Matthews Lutheran Church; and served as Chief of the Liberty Fire Department for many years.

Mr. Misenheimer served in the United States Navy from June 28, 1944, until July 6, 1946, during World War II.

Before joining the United States Navy, he moved to Baltimore, Md., and was a welder on the ships for the Naval Shipyards. He later joined the United States Navy (June 28, 1944) and was on the USS ATR77 Seagoing Tug (Pacific Ocean, Guam, Sydney, Australia and Manila, Philippines and many islands in the Pacific Ocean). After the atomic bomb, the USS ATR77 was the first vessel to go into Tokyo Bay to clear the way for the USS Missouri and other vessels. When Japan surrendered to the United States, the surrender papers were signed on the USS Missouri. The USS ATR77 was tied up to the USS Missouri at the time of the official surrender. Sam had an honorable discharge from the United States Navy on July 6, 1946.

After World War II, he came home and married his high school sweetheart, Mary Elizabeth "Betsy" Trexler. Sam then started a dairy farm for Coble dairy, became a farmer and began a business with his dozer by grading land, clearing land, digging basements and ponds. He started Misenheimer Trucking in 1960 and was the bookkeeper, mechanic, welder and truck driver. Later in 1971, he incorporated and his children became active in the business; now some of his grandchildren are also with the business.
He and several other men from the community started Liberty Volunteer Fire Department. Funds were raised by having Chicken and Dumpling suppers. He purchased the first truck for the fire department, and with the help of the other men, they converted the truck by adding tanks and pumps.

Sam was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He was an honorable man who set examples for his family by his actions and hard work, and that is why we all respect and admire him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth "Betsy" Trexler Misenheimer, who passed away Nov. 30, 2009. They were married on Aug. 2, 1946. He was also preceded in death by his brother, W.W. Huskin "Bill" Misenheimer; and greatgrandchild Corbin Michael Kirk.

He is survived by sons Dennis "Mose" Wayne Misenheimer and wife Connie, Randy Allen Misenheimer and wife Peggy; daughter Judith "Judy" M. Goodnight and husband Fidel; grandchildren Samantha M. John and husband Billy, Sam Allen Misenheimer and wife Kasey, Carrie G. Cross and husband Nathan, Kacie M. Goodnight and special friend Emmett Sapp, Roxie M. Kirk and husband Josh, Waylon Misenheimer; and great-grandchild Emmaline Kate Misenheimer; brothers Leo Junior Misenheimer of Hannah, S.C.; and sister Phoebe M. Lakey of Mocksville. He is also survived by his special companion, his "little dog" Clover.
