MOUNT ULLA - George "Leonard" Hoffner, 91, of Mount Ulla, passed away Friday, March 14, 2014, at his residence.

He was born Dec. 21, 1922, in Rowan County, the son of the late Martin Luther Hoffner and Victoria Cline Hoffner. Leonard graduated from Mount Ulla High School in 1942 and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a retired dairy farmer, a furniture maker and a gardener.

Leonard was honored by the Rowan County Fair Association in 2010 for his many years of service. He was a charter member of the Millbridge Ruritan Club and a member of the Rowan County Holstein Club.

A member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, he served on the Congregation Council and other committees.

He enjoyed sports, dancing, fishing trips with his brothers, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and telling stories and jokes.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Evelyn Trexler Hoffner, who he married Feb. 19, 1949; brother Nathan Ivey Hoffner; sisters Blanche H. Lentz, Pauline H. McBride, Thelma H. Kennerly and Ruth H. Connelly; and son-in-law Bennie Silliman.

Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Linda H. Silliman, Alan L. Hoffner (Connie), Karen H. Moore (Johnny), Lori H. Corriher (Craig); sisters Margaret H. Kennerly and Naomi H. Kepley (Brice); brothers Carl L. Hoffner and James (Bill) W. Hoffner (Ernestine); grandchildren Tracy S. Carter, Erin S. Hayes, Brandy S. Starnes, Alex T. Silliman, Brian J. Moore, Allison M. Williams, Shelly M. Braddy, Christopher Hoffner, Amy H. Poirier, Meredith C. Jones and Eric L. Corriher; and great-grandchildren Chandler Carter, Wesley Carter, Lauren Hayes, Ben Starnes, Emry Starnes, Finley Moore, Anabelle Moore, Patrick Williams, Owen Hoffner, Ansley Hoffner and Grey Braddy (yet to arrive).

The family would like to give a special thanks to caregivers Debbie Osmon, Patty Russell and Sam Waller.

Visitation: 1:30-3:45 p.m. Sunday, March 16 at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 1102 NC Hwy. 801, Mount Ulla, NC 28125.

Service: 4 p.m. Sunday, March 16 at St. Luke's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Mary Louise Sitton officiating. Burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Memorials: St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Cemetery Fund, Mount Ulla, NC; or Rowan Hospice and Palliative Care.
