Richard Stowe, Sr.

Richard Warren "Dick" Stowe, Sr., 93, of Wesley Commons, died peacefully on Friday, September 30th, 2016 with his loving family at his side.  

Richard ("Dick"), son of the late Claude and Esther Maxson Stowe, was born on December 18, 1922 in Wheeler, Michigan. He was married to Amy Morgan Stowe in June of 1942 in Salisbury, NC and moved to Greensboro, NC before heading to World War II.  

Richard was inducted into the US Army in March, 1943. He served in the Philippines (Luzon) for nearly two years. When World War II ended, he was assigned to General McArthur's Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan until he returned to his home in Greensboro in early 1946. 

He attended People's Bible School in Greensboro and later completed his BS Degree in Business Administration from Lander University, August 14, 1984.

Richard moved with his family to Greenwood in late 1961 to head up the Human Resources Department for Parke Davis & Company which built their new plant in Greenwood by June of 1962. In this new position, Richard hired over 500 new employees within Greenwood to help staff the new plant. He retired from Parke Davis (bought out by Pfizer) in 1981.  

Richard was a cornerstone in the community and soon became involved in serving in many different civic organizations in Greenwood County including 28 years on the Salvation Army Advisory Board, member of the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce, first Chairman of the SC Festival of Flowers and served four terms on Greenwood's School District Board of Trustees. He also served as President of Emerald City Rotary Club, and received the Paul Harris Fellow Award from Rotary International.

Richard was faithfully devoted to South Main Street Baptist Church for over 50 years. He served as Deacon for many years and was elected to Honorary Life Deacon. He also served the church as interim music director, Director of the Seniors Sunday School Department for 29 years and also received the church's 50 Years of Meritorious Award.

He was preceded in death by Amy Morgan Stowe and is survived by his, son, Richard W. Stowe, Jr., & wife, Beverly of Hoschton, GA; son, Steve Stowe and wife Linda of Portland, OR; daughter, Karen Howison and husband Ray, of Charlotte, NC; their loving 6 grandchildren who reside in many parts of the country including OR, NY, NC, and GA. and 3 step-grandchildren who reside in VA and GA. In addition they have eight great grandchildren. Richard's brother, Donald Stowe lives in St. Louis, MO. His sisters Lucille Ragland and Mary Matthews and their spouses are deceased.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, October 5th at 1pm in the Connecting Place at South Main Street Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2pm at South Main Street Baptist Church by Rev. Ryan Eklund and Dr. Toby Frost.

Entombment with Military Honors will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

Grandchildren will be pallbearers.

The honorary escort will be members of the Richard Carter Sunday School Class.
