Notes for Rita Marie Shaver
Rita Williams

Rita Marie Shaver Williams passed away on Sunday September 14, 2014 at Rex Hospital in Raleigh. She was born to Seburn Cowan and Laura Lee Shaver in Rowan County, North Carolina on December 23, 1929 and was very proud of her age of 84.

Rita graduated from Granite Quarry High School in 1947 and married Hubert Grover Williams on January 10, 1948. They began their lives together in Salisbury and had three daughters, Sharon Lee Williams of Albemarle, Darby Williams Scott (husband Bill) of Clinton, and Laura Williams Viola (husband David) of Mt. Holly. She worked at Cannon Mills in Salisbury and PPG Industries in Lexington from which she retired in 1991.

Rita's faith in God was the center of her life. She grew up in a home of devout and faithful Lutherans. During her life she was a member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Messiah Lutheran Church, and after moving to Richfield upon retirement she became a member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church. Rita moved to Autumn Wind Assisted Living in Roseboro, North Carolina in 2011 following an illness. She joined Graves Memorial Presbyterian Church and attended regularly.

Throughout her life she ministered to others by teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir, being a Luther League youth adviser, serving on the church counsel, teaching confirmation classes, being a leader in Lutheran Church Women of America , and teaching her children to love God. She had various hobbies throughout her life but reading was her passion. Rita did not have the opportunity to attend college and once told her daughter she educated herself by reading everything she could get her hands on. Books were like gold to her.

Rita was blessed with love in which she gave to her family unconditionally. Besides her own children her pride and joy were her five grandchildren, Sarah Scott Lane, Kathryn Scott Jackson, Allison Scott Driver, Katelyn Marie Viola, and Nicholas David Viola. Her most recent joy came from her great granddaughters, Savannah Kate Jackson, Morgan Leigh Jackson, Kenner Elizabeth Lane, and arriving in October, Taylor Grace Driver. Life revolved around those she loved , especially the children.

Rita was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Grover Williams, her parents Laura Lee Bame Shaver and Seburn Cowan Shaver, a sister, Laura Shaver Kluttz, and two brothers, Homer Shelton Shaver, and Jerry Seburn Shaver. She is also preceded by a sister-in-law Hazeline Williams Worrick.

Rita is also survived by her dear sister in law Maxine Williams Spivey and nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly.

A funeral service will take place at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in Richfield officiated by Reverend Ruth Ann Sipes on Sunday September 21, 2014 at 3:00. Burial will follow in the Richfield Cemetery. Visitation will take place at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church fellowship hall one hour prior to the service at 2:00.

In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in Richfield, North Carolina or Graves Memorial Presbyterian Church Music Fund in Clinton, North Carolina.

Hartsell Funeral Home of Albemarle is serving the Williams family.
