Hubert Williams

Hubert Grover Williams, 84, of 49182 Willie Road, Richfield, died at 9:08 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, 2006, in Autumn Care in Salisbury.

His funeral was at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in Richfield, where he was a member. Rev. Robert Mitschke officiated and burial was in Richfield Cemetery with military rites at graveside by Stanly County DAV Chapter 12.

Born Aug. 5, 1922, in Rowan County, he was a son of the late John Grover Williams and Carrie Nelsa Lemley Williams and was a retired painter for Cannon Mills. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II.

Mr. Williams lived in Salisbury for 46 years where he was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and was active on the church council, the property committee and as a youth leader. After retirement, he moved his family to Richfield where he was a member of Mt. Zion Lutheran Church. Here he became known as the candy man because he always treated the kids “and some adults” to sweets He was a member of the Richfield VFW Post. He loved to tend garden, to fish and to hunt.

He is survived by his wife Rita Shaver Williams of Richfield; three daughters, Darby Williams Scott and husband, Bill, of Clinton, Pat Williams Viola and husband, David, of Mt. Holly, and Sharon Williams of Albemarle; two sisters, Maxine Spivey and Hazeline Worrick, both of Richfield; and five grandchildren.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hartsell Funeral Home in Albemarle. At other times they met at his home.
