James Herbert (Red) Hamilton

James Herbert (Red) Hamilton went to be with the Lord on May 6, 2018. He was the son of the late James Robert and Maxie Martin Hamilton of Easley, SC. James enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942, serving in combat duty during WWII. He served on several ships and military commands during his Navy career, including the USS IOWA, amphibious cargo and personnel transports, landing ship tanks (LST); Flag Allowance COMPHIBLANT, Amphibious Training Command and Amphibious Operational Training Unit. After completing 25 year of active duty, he retired in 1966, as Chief Boatswain Mate. Following James’ Navy retirement, he was employed by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles; retiring from his second career as a DMV Investigator in 1989.

James is an active member of Calvary Assembly of God, Providence Road, Virginia Beach, a member of Fleet Reserve Chapter 99, and a past Worshipful Master of Lynnhaven Masonic Lodge #220 AF & AM.

He leaves behind his wife, Yvonne; two granddaughters, Cindy Becker and Sandra Johnson of Virginia Beach; two step-grandchildren, David Masiello and Lisa Westfall; four great-grandchildren, Eastin and Shae Johnson, and Ben and Dominic Becker of Virginia Beach; one sister, Maryann Culbertson, and one brother, Paul Hamilton, of Easley, SC. James is preceded in death by daughter, Barbara Sue; and two brothers, Bill and Jack.

A visitation at Altmeyer Funeral Home on Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach will be 7:00-9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 8, 2018, and funeral service will be at Calvary Assembly of God on Providence Road, Virginia Beach, at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9, 2018. Internment will follow at Rosewood Memorial Park, Virginia Beach, with Military Honors and Masonic Rites.
