Edwin Earle Koontz
Edwin Earle Koontz, 86 of Salisbury, died peacefully at the Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House Tuesday night May 9, 2017.
Born February 7, 1931 in Salisbury, he was the son of the late Allen Thornton Koontz and Emma Poole Koontz. He graduated from Spencer High School in 1949, Catawba College in 1953 and presented for his masters in Social Work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1954.
After returning from Chapel Hill, Mr. Koontz went to work at the Rowan County Department of Social Services in 1954 where he was employed for 41 years. For the last 22 years at DSS, he was the Director. He retired in 1995 and in 2013 received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the North Carolina Director’s Association.
Mr. Koontz was a member of First United Methodist Church of Salisbury, and he was involved in church music throughout his life. He was previously the Music Director at Trading Ford Baptist Church for over 40 years. He was also a lifelong member of the Spencer Lion’s Club where he served as president, as well as serving as District Governor for the North Carolina Lion’s Club.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Melvene Goodman Koontz, as well as by his brother Robert Van Koontz and sister Naomi Koontz Devereux. He is survived by his son Earle Allen Koontz; daughter-in-law Laura Brock Koontz of Salisbury and two grandchildren William Parrish Koontz and Evan Brock Koontz.
Service: The memorial service will be held at 4:00 P.M. on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at First United Methodist Church of Salisbury, officiated by the Rev.Dr. Mark Conforti. A private burial will take place prior to the memorial service.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church Music Fund or to North Carolina Lions, Inc.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude for the care and comfort offered by the staff at the Carillon Assisted Living Facility, Dr. Brent Seifret and Mr. Chuck Noto, all of whom provided time, love and support for Mr. Koontz over the past few years.
