Notes for Gladys Gette
Gladys Gette Lipe

Gladys Gette Lipe, 98 of Kannapolis, formerly of Philipsburg, PA, passed away Sunday, February 6, 2005 at the Brian Center of Concord.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 9, 2005, in Lady's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jim Yow officiating. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park.

The family of Mrs. Lipe will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Wednesday prior to the service.

Born on June 9, 1906 in Philipsburg, she was the daughter of Claude Anthony and Anna Hamer Gette. After graduation from Philipsburg High School in 1924, she took a degree at the Boston School of Physical Education, and was then employed teaching physical education at the Brimmer School in Boston and at the Annie Wright Seminary in Tacoma, Wash.

In the mid-1930's she came back to Philipsburg to help nurse her brother Warren through a lengthy illness, then during World War II served as a Captain in the Women's' Army Corps. Here she met Dr. Edwin Witherspoon Lipe, a Captain in the Army Dental Corps. They were married in Kannapolis on January 10, 1946. Mrs. Lipe subsequently served as receptionist and accountant for her husband's dental practice in Kannapolis and Monroe, NC.

Dr. and Mrs. Lipe were members of Trinity United Methodist Church in Kannapolis. They celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary shortly before Dr. Lipe's death on October 19, 1999.

Mrs. Lipe was the last of her generation, preceded in death by her husband and five brothers: Frank, Harry, Claude, Warren and Luther. She and her husband had no children, but many are the nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews who loved them dearly and always awaited their visits. When Aunt Gladie and Uncle Ed came to Philipsburg, the Gettes celebrated. Visits to Kannapolis were eagerly anticipated. Sadly missed are those days, and great the sorrow over their passing.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, Kannapolis, NC.
