Mary Elizabeth Vanhoy Harwood

Mary Elizabeth Vanhoy Harwood, 76, of New London, NC,  passed away Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at CMC Main, Charlotte.  Her funeral service will be graveside at 3 PM on Thursday, June 14, 2018 at Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery with Pastor Steve Combs officiating.  The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM on Wednesday evening at Stanly Funeral and Cremation Care of Albemarle.

Born March 29, 1942 in Stanly County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Ernest Harding Vanhoy and Maggie Frances Ussery Vanhoy.  She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, with a focus on demonstrating God’s love and purpose each step of the way.  She enjoyed studying God’s word daily and was a skillful seamstress and painter.  She participated with local church organizations in serving local community needs.  She worked for over 30 years as a tax preparer with H&R Block, a co-team truck driver with her husband, Tim, for approximately six years, and a licensed cosmetologist.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Tim Riley Harwood, children Sandy Poplin Grissom, Randy Dale Poplin, Robert Wayne Poplin and wife Tammy, Tammy Poplin Purvis and husband Jeff, Suzanne Harwood Shields and husband Delaine, Lisa Rainelle Harwood and Kaylene Doniece Harwood and wife Tracy, 14 grandchildren, 7 step-grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given to Salem United Methodist Church.
