KANNAPOLIS - Murray (Bud) Vernon Stancil, 85, of 107 N. East Avenue, died Wednesday, January 23, 2008, at CMC NorthEast after a lengthy illness.

Born July 27, 1922, in Cabarrus County, he was the son of the late Callie Wilson Stancil and the late Marie Garver Stancil. He attended Cabarrus County schools.

Mr. Stancil retired from Cannon Mills Co. Plant 1 Card Room after 45 years of service. He had volunteered at NorthEast Medical Center and then returned to the workforce, finally retiring after 10 years with the Nuclear Medicine Department at NorthEast Medical Center.

Mr. Stancil was a life-long member of North Kannapolis Baptist Church. He had served as a Deacon, was active with the Baptist Men, and helped prepare breakfasts for many years. Mr. Stancil was also a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII. He loved his family, was a wonderful storyteller, and had a memorable sense of humor.

Mr. Stancil was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Ethel Wagoner Stancil, who died December 12, 2007. Others preceding him in death were son-in-law Joseph Purvis; two sisters, Cleo Frick and Alice Simmons; a brother C. W. (June) Stancil, Jr.; and a daughter-in-law Patricia Stancil.

Survivors include daughters Pam Purvis and Jan Forster, both of Kannapolis; son Steve Stancil and wife Judy of Landis; sisters Rachel Creasman and husband Lane of Mechanicsburg, Pa., and Ruby McGuire of Kannapolis; five grandchildren, Craig Stancil and wife Loretta, Jesse McGill and wife Aisha, Matthew Purvis and wife Amanda, Jana Purvis and Sarah Purvis; and 7 great-grandchildren.

Visitation: 1-3:00 p.m. Saturday, January 26, at Whitley's Funeral Home. The family has made their headquarters at the home at 107 N. East Avenue, Kannapolis.

Service: 3:00 p.m. Saturday, January 26, at Whitley's Funeral Home Main Chapel. Rev. Coy C. Privette will officiate. Burial will follow in Carolina Memorial Park.

Memorials: North Kannapolis Baptist Church; or DaVita Dialysis Patient Fund, Kannapolis.
