C.W. Surratt Jr.
C.W. Surratt Jr., 89, of Rose Hill, NC, passed away Wednesday, June 8th, 2005, at home.
A 1936 graduate of North Carolina State College with a degree in Civil Engineering, he was involved in the timber industry for many years harvesting and replanting millions of trees.
For 64 years, C.W. was a loyal member of the Rose Hill Methodist Church, serving in many capacities.
As mayor of Rose Hill from 1959-61, he worked diligently to bring new industry to the community and to Duplin County as president of the first Duplin Development Commission. His many civic contributions were recognized in 1984 when Governor James Hunt awarded him the Order of the Long Leaf Pine.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lois Peeler Surratt; daughter, Mary Ellen Golden and husband John of Wilmington, NC; son, John P. Surratt and wife Amelia of Clinton, NC; son, Robert W. Surratt and wife Pat of Concord, NC; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the Rose Hill United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 10th.
