Clyde Melvin Gillespie

SALISBURY - Clyde Melvin Gillespie, 93, died Saturday, March 28, 2009, at Genesis Healthcare Center.

He was born Sept. 7, 1915, in Rowan County, the son of the late Mabel Cress Gillespie and James (Floyd) Gillespie.

He was a graduate of Mount Ulla High School, a farmer and worked for 35 years at Cannon Mills.

Mr. Gillespie was a member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church, where he was an usher and served on the building and cemetery committees.

Preceding him in death was his wife of 69 years, Katherine Kluttz Gillespie, whom he married April 16, 1938; son, Russell Gillespie; brothers, Joe, Roy, James and Richard Gillespie; sister, Lucy Gillespie Prophet.

Survivors include daughter, Rachel Shepherd (Billy) of Salisbury; daughter-in-law, Betty Gillespie of Salisbury; grandchildren, Latina R. Jarvis of Salisbury, Sheri Styron of Pine Level, Timothy Gillespie of Love Valley and Lisa Eagle of Salisbury; step-grandchildren, Craig, Kevin and Steve Rufty; great-grandchildren, Dustin M. Watson of Ft. Benning, Ga., Ana Styron of Pine Level, Robert Eagle of Calif. and Scarlet Eagle of Salisbury; five great-great grandchildren; and one great-great-great-grandchild.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Monday at Lyerly Funeral Home.

Service and Burial: 3 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke's Lutheran Church with Rev. Mary Louise Sitton presiding. Burial following in church cemetery.

Memorials: St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Cemetery Fund, 11020 NC Hwy 801, Mt. Ulla, NC.
