Dr. Nanci C. Motsinger

HIGH POINT — Dr. Nanci C. Motsinger of High Point passed away on Thursday, June 25, 2015 at Pennybyrn at Maryfield.

She is survived by her husband, Carl Motsinger of the home, whom she married on April 12th, 1963; two daughters, Shandel Andrews (Herb) of Archdale; Stephanie Coggins (Brandon) of High Point; one grandson, John Andrews; three granddaughters, Hollis Andrews, Caroline and Claire Coggins; one sister, Jane Skeen (Dwain) of High Point, their two daughters Kathryn (J.D.) Smith of Greenville, NC and Liz Skeen of High Point along with other numerous nieces and nephews.

Nanci was born July 8th, 1941 to William Homer and Cathern Hodge Coggin of New London, NC.  She graduated from Albemarle High School in 1959. Nanci obtained a Bachelor of Science degree with honors from Appalachian State Teachers College (University) in 1963 and a Master of Education degree from UNC-Greensboro in 1966. She held honor memberships in Beta Beta and Phi Gamma Mu at Appalachian. Nanci was awarded the Doctor of Education and Business Administration from UNC-Greensboro in 1974.  While studying toward her doctoral degree, Nanci held a graduate fellowship at UNC-Greensboro supervising student interns in the field of education.  After completing the doctoral program, she continued special studies at the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro.

Nanci began her career in education and leadership at Hanes Junior High School in Winston-Salem, NC and became a guidance counselor at Ragsdale High School in Jamestown, NC. While there, she was awarded the "Outstanding Faculty Award" in 1967. She was appointed to the position of Associate Dean of Students and Dean of Women at High Point College (University), where she served as Assistant Professor of Education and supervised student interns. She received the Jerome B. Smith award in 1971. Dr. Motsinger remained at High Point College (University) for eleven years after which she accepted a position with High Point City Schools ( Guilford County Schools) under Superintendent Eddie West. While there, Dr. Motsinger developed and implemented a preventive Alcohol Education Program which became a model for school systems in North Carolina.  She retired from Guilford County Schools System in 1993.

She also served on the Board of Trustees at Appalachian State University and was President of the Alumni Association.  She was an Alumni officer from 1975-1982.  Dr. Motsinger was listed in the Who's Who of American Women in the 1972- 1973 7th edition.

Nanci was very active in church and civic affairs. She was a member of Emerywood Baptist Church where she taught an adult Sunday School Class.

Dr. Motsinger was elected to two consecutive terms on the High Point City Council.  She was active with the United Way of High Point and volunteered with the Altrusa Service Club and the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club. Nanci was nominated by U.S. Representative Howard Coble and was appointed by U.S. Secretary of Transportation, James Burnley, to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Advisory Board.  She served on the seven member board from 1988 – 1991.

Funeral services for Nanci will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday at Emerywood Baptist Church with the Reverend Dr. Robert Ferguson and the Reverend Dr. Harold Warlick officiating.

Interment will follow in Saints Delight Cemetery, Kernersville. The family will greet friends Sunday from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Emerywood Baptist Church; Pennybyrn at Maryfield Charitable Care Fund; or to the charity of your choice.
