Billy Arnold Sloop

Kannapolis - Billy Arnold Sloop, age 77, of 510 Queens Gate Drive, died Thursday, April 16, 2009 at CMC-NorthEast, Concord, NC.

He was born September 1, 1931 in Rowan County, NC, the son of the late Herman S. Sloop and Mary Frances Smith Sloop. 

He was a graduate of J.W. Cannon High School in 1949 and Evans Business College in 1957. He was employed with the former Fieldcrest-Cannon, Inc. Plt.#1 Data Processing Dept. for 43 years as a Bath Products Planner. He retired December 31, 1993. He later worked 3 years as a security guard.

He was a combat veteran of the Korean War having served in the 461st Infantry Battalion. He was also a life member of V.F.W. Poston-Perkins Post 8989 having served as Commander in 1984 and was awarded a Rowan Veteran of the Year. Other affiliations include being a member of the Korean War Veterans, Inc. and the D.A.V. Chapter 27 in Concord, NC.

He was a charter member of New Hope Lutheran Church, Kannapolis, NC for more than 60 years having been a part of the former conversion fellowship of Bethany Lutheran Church.

The funeral service will be 2:00 P.M. Sunday, April 19, 2009 at New Hope Lutheran Church, Kannapolis, NC officiated by Rev. Kim E. Trabold. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery, China Grove, NC with military rites conducted by the N.C. National Guard Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Saturday, April 18, 2009 at Whitley's Funeral Home.

Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Emily Culp Sloop; one son, Eric "Lyn" Sloop and daughter-in-law, Vicki of Jamestown, NC; his daughter, Pamela G. Sloop of Fuquay Varina, NC; his sister, Helen S. Cline of Mooresville, NC; his grandson, Cameron Sloop; his stepson, David Basinger and wife, Brenda of Fort Mill, SC; his granddaughter, Kelly Basinger; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to New Hope Lutheran Church, Kannapolis, NC.
