Alfred Cross 'Buddy' Leonard

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. - Alfred Cross "Buddy" Leonard, 82, of Mount Pleasant, formerly of Salisbury, N.C., died Jan 14, 2012, at the Hospice Center of Charleston from complications of hip surgery.

Born Oct. 11, 1929, in Salisbury, he was the son of the late William Henry Leonard, Jr. and Marie Morgan Leonard and brother of the late William Henry Leonard III.

Mr. Leonard attended high school at Georgia Military Academy, graduating in 1947. He served in the United States Air Force in the Korean War and attended Catawba College and the University of North Carolina. He was a member of the golf team at UNC.

He was president of Leonard's Jewelers in Salisbury and named Retailer of the Year in 1962 by the Jewelers of America. After selling the stores in 1988, Buddy became a Realtor with the Allen Tate Co. and Keller Williams Realty at Lake Norman. He retired to Mount Pleasant in 2009.

Mr. Leonard grew up in the United Methodist Church in Salisbury and was a member of Centre Presbyterian Church in Mooresville, N.C. He was a member of the Salisbury Rotary Club, past president of Salisbury Jaycees and served on the Committee of the Holiday Caravan Parade and other civic and community events.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Carbone Leonard, who he married Aug 27, 1981; son Alfred Cross Leonard, Jr. of Salt Lake City, Utah; daughters Elizabeth "Liz" Ridenhour of Salisbury, Lynda Maguire of Columbia, Md.; stepdaughter Charlotte Artus and husband Alan of London, England; stepson Mike Eaton of Lake Norman; mother-in-law Myrtle Carbone of Troy, N.C.; grandchildren Jason Cross Ridenhour, Haley Marie Ridenhour, Elizabeth Marie Maguire, Matthew Cooper Maguire, Leo Eaton Artus and Delilah Rose Artus.

Visitation and Service: A Visitation will be held from 12:30-2 p.m. Saturday with a Memorial Service at 2 p.m. at the Summersett Memorial Chapel with the Rev. David Nelson officiating. Interment will follow at Rowan Memorial Park with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Rowan Honor Guard.
