Notes for Jessie Pauline Lyerly
Pauline Lyerly Lefler

ROCKWELL - Pauline Lyerly Lefler, 94, of Rockwell, passed to her eternal home on April 22, 2009, after five years of declining health and five days of serious illness.

Born Sept. 11, 1914, in Rowan County, she was the daughter of the late Sidney Lyerly and Emma Lentz Lyerly. She was educated at Granite Quarry School and was baptized at Christiana Lutheran Church.

She married the late Oliver West Lefler in 1932. He died in 1994. They had the unique distinction of having the same birthday, Sept. 11, although Mr. Lefler was two years older.

Mrs. Lefler worked at Heist-McCain Hosiery in Rockwell for 25 years. She was an active member of Lyerly Evangelical Church, where she was honored in February 2009 for 75 years of membership. She had served in many capacities in the church and was instrumental in raising funds for a new church building.

In retirement, Mrs. Lefler made hundreds of cross-stitch pieces and sold them at craft shows around the state. She was also an avid reader, often reading three books a week until her serious illness began. In 2008 she read 233 books. She was a serious student of the Bible and asked for a Bible dictionary for a recent birthday present.

Her family and friends will remember Mrs. Lefler for her beautiful complexion, contagious smile, loving demeanor, Christian lifestyle, innate intelligence and faithfulness to her church.

Surviving are three children, Jimmy (Jean) Lefler of Salisbury, Nancy (James) Ludwig of Rockwell and Linda (Lanny) Merrell of Rockwell, with whom she made her home; seven grandchildren, Kathy Allen of Ellensburg, Wash., Tim Ludwig of New Bern, Neil Lefler of Salisbury, Gina Cartner of Greenville, S.C., Marcy Brown of Lancaster, S.C., Les Merrell of Rockwell and Lucas Merrell of Salisbury; 16 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Lefler's brother, Harry S. Lyerly of Salisbury, also survives.

She was preceded in death by sisters Fannie Alderman, Daisy Jones and Ruth Rummage.

Visitation and Service: Visitation will be Saturday, April 25, from 1:30-3 p.m. at Lyerly Evangelical Church, 1320 Crescent Road, Rockwell. The funeral will follow at 3 p.m. conducted by Pastor W.C. Gaither, Jr.

Memorials: May be made to Lyerly Evangelical Church at the above address.

Powles Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Mrs. Lefler's family would like to express gratitude to Mary Dunaway, her long-time caregiver; Dr. Gary Fink, Connie Gordon and staff; every person who so lovingly attended her at Rowan Regional Hospital; and the hundreds of believers who have lifted her up over the years.
