Harry S. Lyerly

Harry Sidney Lyerly, 94, of Salisbury passed away Sunday, December 29. 2013 at the Lutheran Home of Trinity Oaks', Salisbury.

Born January 18, 1919 in Rowan County, he was the son of Sidney A. Lyerly and Emma Lentz Lyerly. He attended Rowan County Schools. Harry married Odelia Trexler March 6, 1942.

Harry was a World War II veteran of the US Army having served much of his 4 years and 17 days in India and China as a medic. He flew over "The Hump," the Himalayas, three times and enjoyed talking about his army experiences with family and friends. Harry worked for the Southern Railway for over 35 years.

He was a lifelong member of Christiana Lutheran Church where he served as a church councilman and played on the church's baseball team during his younger years. He enjoyed being a member of Senior Citizens.

Following retirement, Mr. Lyerly loved spending time with his family, working in his garden and yard, and attending senior functions.

Survivors include daughter, Brenda Lyerly Thomason, Larry of Salisbury; Larry D. Lyerly, Jane of Gold Hill, NC; and grandchildren: Millie Lyerly of Asheville, Beth Thomason Wrenn, Bryant of Hurdle Mills, NC; and Wesley Lyerly, Crystal of Gold Hill, NC. Greatgrandchildren: Colton, Reagann and Taylor Wrenn and Jada Lyerly. Harry has six nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Odelia T. Lyerly of 49 years, sisters Maryland Lyerly, Fannie L. Alderman, Daisy L. Jones, Ruth L. Rummage and Pauline L. Lefler, and stepmother, Roxie K. Lyerly.

Harry will be missed by his family and friends.

Visitations: Family will be at Powles Funeral Home from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday.

Services: Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Friday, January 3, 2013, at Christiana Lutheran Church conducted by Rev. Carl Haynes, pastor. Mr. Lyerly will lie in state in the Narthex of the Church 30 Min. before the Funeral Service. Burial will be in the church cemetery, with Military Graveside Rites by the Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard and the NC National Guard.
