SALISBURY - Jewell Martin Alley, 92, passed away Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014 at the Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House.

He was born in Rowan County on Oct. 11, 1922, to the late Joseph Franklin Alley and Argie Leonard Alley. Mr. Alley graduated from East Spencer High School and worked at Duke Power Company (now Duke Energy) for 43 years as a welder and maintenance supervisor, retiring in 1984. After retiring, he could be seen working in his garden, growing vegetables that he shared with many friends and neighbors, and working at the homes of many Rowan County residents because he loved helping other people.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the SeaBees (37th Construction Battalion) of the United States Navy on various islands in the South Pacific. Mr. Alley was an active member of Trading Ford Baptist Church all his life, where he served in many roles to support his faith. He especially enjoyed singing in the choir and performing solos and duets with his wife, Ruby. He served on the Rowan County School Board for the consolidation of Spencer and East Spencer High Schools into North Rowan High School. He also served on the boards of Miller Ferry Fire Department, helping to build the first truck put into service in the 1950's, and Rowan Mutual Fire Insurance Company.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Barry Lamonte Alley; brothers, Albert "Skeet" Alley and Robert Alley; step-brothers, A.B. Leonard, Jr. and William Leonard; sisters, Wilma Alley Butler, Dorothy Alley Butler and Betty Bowler; step-sisters, Irmena Leonard Copley, Geneva Leonard Thomas and Helen Leonard Barnes;and several nephews and a niece.
