Kevil Richard Hughes, 84, a resident of 1723 Old N.C. Highway 109, Silver Valley community, died Monday evening, June 18, 2012 at the Westchester Manor Nursing Center in High Point.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church by the Rev. James Summey and David Meredith officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors by the Randolph County Honor Guard. Mr. Hughes will remain at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville until taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and other times at the home.

He was born May 5, 1928, in Davidson County, a son of Everett Kates Hughes and Eulah Roxie Snider Hughes. Mr. Hughes was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving the Korean War, 120th Engineer Combat Battalion, 45th Infantry Division, Company C known as "The Thunderbirds."

He was employed with the former Dixie Furniture Co. of Lexington for 35 years before retiring from Thomasville Furniture in 1993 and continuing to work until 2002. He was a former member of the Silver Valley Volunteer Fire Department, receiving "Fireman of the Year" in 1982. He was also a charter member of the Silver Valley Civitan Club. Mr. Hughes was a former member of Clarksbury United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Men. In recent years, he became a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church in Thomasville.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Pearly Moore, and brothers Jaffie Hughes and Clifford Hughes.
