Martha Lou Mauney Fisher

Martha Lou Mauney Fisher, 92, of Rockwell, NC passed away entering the Church Triumphant on December 5, 2012 after an extended illness. She was born March 4, 1920 in Kings Mountain, NC to the late Samuel Augustus and Anna Mauney. She was the devoted wife and partner of the Rev. Dr. Clifford Paul Fisher, II for 69 years. Martha was a faithful member of St. James Lutheran Church in Rockwell, NC.

Martha was an honor graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College with a degree in elementary education. She taught elementary students in Charlotte, Kannapolis, and Mt. Pleasant, NC and was later a substitute teacher in the Cayce-West Columbia, SC school system. Martha and her husband served Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Rimertown, NC; St. James Lutheran Church in Rockwell, NC; and Transfiguration Lutheran Church in Cayce, SC. At these churches, she was a dedicated teacher for all the educational programs including Sunday School, Bible School and Weekday Church School. She joined her husband sharing the good news of Christ's love and visiting the sick and elderly.

While raising her family in Rimertown, NC she was active in numerous community groups including the Homemaker's Club and the 4H Club. In Columbia, SC she was an active volunteer for the United Service Organization (USO), Laubauch Literacy program for teaching adults to read, and Cayce-West Columbia Garden Club. Martha also served as a leader of the Parish Education Committees of the North and South Carolina synods of the Lutheran Church in America. She was a board member and convention chairperson for the Lutheran Church Women of SC.

After retirement to NC she was long-time member of the Christian Women Bible Study group. Martha was by her husband's side during his ministry as an interim Lutheran pastor for churches in the Rowan, Cabarrus, and Stanly counties for 30 years after retirement.

Martha is survived by her husband, Clifford Paul Fisher II, of Rockwell, NC. She was the mother of three children: Jean Fisher Cook (Charles) of Columbia, SC; Zelia Fisher Frick (Rev. Woodrow) of Salisbury, NC; and Clifford Paul Fisher III (Margaret) of Lexington, SC. She was grandmother to seven grandchildren: Randall David Cook of New York City, NY; Christina Cook Newhouse (Ken) of Columbia, SC; Michael C. Cook (Michelle) of Matthews, NC; Dr. Rebekah Frick Julian (Scott) of Salisbury, NC; Benjamin W. Frick of Glen Allen, VA; Clifford Paul Fisher IV of Lexington, SC; and Tiffany Fisher of Columbia, SC; and six great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, December 10th at St. Peters Lutheran Church, 2570 Saint Peters Church Road, Salisbury NC, conducted by Rev. Craig Sigmon. The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 9th from 5 PM to 7 PM at Powles Funeral Home located at 913 W Main Street, Rockwell NC and prior to the funeral service on Monday from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM at St. Peters Lutheran Church. Burial will follow the service at the Faith Lutheran Church cemetery, 205 S Main Street, Faith, NC.

Memorials may be made to the Fisher Scholarship fund either at Trinity Lutheran Church, Landis, NC, or to St. James Lutheran Church, Rockwell, NC.

The family wishes to expresses their appreciation to all of Martha Fisher's caregivers: Tender Hearted Home Care, Autumn Care of Salisbury, Rowan Hospice and the very caring staff of Rowan Regional Memorial Hospital.
