Reverend Clifford Paul “C.P.” Fisher
The Reverend Dr. Clifford Paul Fisher, Jr of Rockwell, NC entered the Church Triumphant on September 6, 2016 at Trinity Oaks Health and Rehab in Salisbury, NC. Rev. Fisher was born on October 16, 1918 in Rowan County, NC to the late Reverend Dr. Clifford Paul Fisher, Sr. and Zelia Pless Fisher.
Rev. Fisher attended China Grove and Rockwell Elementary Schools and graduated from Landis High School. He received his bachelor's degree from Lenoir-Rhyne College and his Bachelor of Divinity from the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, SC. He was ordained a Lutheran Pastor in 1943 and later received an Honorary Doctorate from Lenoir-Rhyne University. Rev. Fisher served as a full time pastor or interim pastor until the age of 90.
Rev. Fisher began his ministry at Cross of Christ Lutheran in Rimertown from 1943-1949. While pastor of St. James Lutheran Church in Rockwell from 1949-1962, the congregation built an educational building, the first preschool program was begun, and he was the first chairman of the Farmers' Fall Fair. Rev. Fisher was called to serve Transfiguration Lutheran Church in Cayce, SC from 1962-1983 where he fulfilled a desire to serve as a Mission Pastor. He led them in the building of a sanctuary with office and classroom space. He retired in 1983 from full time pastoring and transferred to the North Carolina Synod as an interim pastor.
Rev. Fisher served as the interim pastor at numerous North Carolina churches including the following: St. Peters Lutheran of Salisbury, Union Lutheran of Salisbury, Cross of Christ Lutheran in Rimertown, Trinity Lutheran of Landis, Ebenezer Lutheran of China Grove, Concordia Lutheran of China Grove, Mt. Moriah Lutheran of China Grove, St. Stephens Lutheran of Gold Hill, New Hope Lutheran of Kannapolis, Mt. Zion Lutheran of Richfield, First Lutheran of Albemarle, and Lutheran Chapel in China Grove. Trinity Lutheran of Landis built a new ministry center in 2007 and named the main hall of the new ministry center in honor of Rev. and Mrs. C. P Fisher, Jr. Throughout his pastoral years, his main goal was to proclaim the good news about Jesus Christ's love and salvation to others.
Rev. Fisher was an active member of the Rockwell Civitan Club for thirty years serving as president and chaplain. In addition to his ministry, Rev. Fisher demonstrated a great interest and love for sports. He played on the basketball team at Lenoir-Rhyne College and enjoyed coaching youth in numerous community / church basketball and softball teams in NC and SC through age 75. For more than 20 years, Rev. Fisher was very active in The NC State Senior Games where he participated in the golf, basketball, football and running events. He won the gold medal in the 100 Meter Dash at the State Finals in Raleigh NC when he was 92 years old. Rev. Fisher and his wife Martha also enjoyed traveling across the United States, Canada, Europe, Israel, and Egypt. They hosted tours to the Holy Land. He enjoyed fishing and was a talented carpenter. Pastor Fisher had a passion for singing and participated as a member of various church, college, and community choirs throughout his life until the age of 96. Rev. Fisher made an impact on every church and community where he lived and was a true man of God who always looked for ways to help others and share the love of Christ.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Martha Lou Mauney Fisher; a brother, Vern Fisher; and three sisters, Edith Fisher, Margaret Fisher, and Mary Gladys Poovey.
He is survived by two daughters, Jean Fisher Cook (Charles) of Columbia, SC; Zelia Fisher Frick (Rev. Woodrow) of Salisbury, NC; a son, Clifford Paul Fisher III (Margaret) of Lexington, SC; seven grandchildren, Randall David Cook of New York City, NY; Christina Cook Newhouse (Ken) of Columbia, SC; Michael C. Cook (Michelle) of Matthews, NC; Dr. Rebekah Frick Julian (Scott) of Salisbury, NC; Benjamin W. Frick (Terri) of Denver, NC; Clifford Paul Fisher IV of Lexington, SC; and Tiffany Fisher Curry (Chris) of Lexington, SC; Justin Roberson (Jade) of Lexington, SC; TJ Roberson of Lexington, SC and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation: The family will receive friends on Friday evening, September 9 from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm at Powles Staton Funeral Home located at 913 W Main Street, Rockwell and prior to the funeral service from 10:00 am to 10:45 am at St. James Lutheran Church.
Service: The funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 10 at St. James Lutheran Church, 131 W Main Street, Rockwell, NC conducted by Rev. Jason Huebner. Burial will follow the service at the Faith Lutheran Church cemetery, 205 S Main Street, Faith, NC.
Memorials may be made to the Fisher Scholarship Fund at Trinity Lutheran Church, Landis, NC, or to St James Lutheran Church, Rockwell, NC.
