Phyllis Kluttz Byrd

SALISBURY - Phyllis Kluttz Byrd, 80, of Salisbury, passed away Saturday, Jan. 3, 2015 at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center.

Born July 31, 1934 in Rowan County, she was the daughter of the late Bernie Jacob Kluttz and Faye Holshouser Kluttz of Spencer.

She was a graduate of Spencer High School, Class of 1952.

Mrs. Byrd was employed by Southern Bell Telephone Company in Salisbury for 10 years and retired from Rack Room Shoes in management.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Salisbury, the Dorcas Faithful Workers Class and served as Class Officer. She was also a member of the Spencer Women of the Moose, Harold B. Jarret Auxiliary, lifetime member of AMVETS Auxiliary Post 460.

Mrs. Byrd was a Charter Member of the Classy Red Hats Society of Salisbury, volunteered at the W. G. Hefner V.A. Medical Center and a Charter Member of the Tri-County Scooters Line Dancing Club in Kannapolis.

Her favorite past-time was being with friends of Dorcas Faithful Workers, the Classy Red Hats and line dancing with friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold James Byrd, Sr. on May 10, 2002; brother, Robert Lee Kluttz and sister, Peggy Kluttz Safrit.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Debra Sparger and husband Kelly, of Granite Quarry; Jamie Peeler and husband Dennis, of Rockwell and son, Harold James "Jim" Byrd, Jr. and wife Julie, of Salisbury; brother-in-law, Jerry Safrit of China Grove; grandchildren, Heather Dyer and husband Kerry, of Granite Quarry, Justin Sparger and wife, Christie, of Salisbury, Denise Craig and husband Reid, of Rockwell, Harli Peeler, of Salisbury, Alex Byrd, Jacob Byrd, and Carsen Byrd, of Salisbury; five great-grandchildren and a niece and nephews.

Visitation and Services: The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 5, 2015 at Summersett Funeral Home.

Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at the Summersett Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Kenneth Lance, minister of the First Baptist Church of Salisbury, officiating. Interment will follow at Rowan Memorial Park.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Parkinsons Disease Foundation, Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, 65 W 168th St., New York, NY 10032-9982
