David “Dave” Shaver

Mr. David Cowan “Dave” Shaver, 85, of Salisbury, passed away Jan. 8, 2016, in Boise, Idaho. Born May 13, 1930, in Kobe, Japan, he was a son of missionaries, the late Rev. Isaac Leroy Shaver and Pearl Elizabeth Tesh Shaver of Rowan and Forsyth counties. He was a resident of eastern Rowan and Salisbury since 1982.

Mr. Shaver spent his childhood in Japan, Korea and Idaho. After graduating from Caldwell High School and attending the College of Idaho, he entered the U.S. Army from Caldwell, Idaho, in 1949. After the Korean War he returned to Idaho until reenlisting in the Army in 1955.

Mr. Shaver retired from the Army in 1975 in the rank of First Sergeant. His career included tours in Okinawa, Vietnam, Japan and Taiwan, and various posts within the United States. Following retirement from the Army, Mr. Shaver taught Junior ROTC for five years at Boise High School, Idaho, and attended Boise State University. In 1982 he moved to Rowan County. He worked for the Salisbury Housing Authority as Stock Manager and retired in 1991. He was a member of Zion United Methodist Church. He was a life-member of the VFW Post 3006 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 96; and was also a member of Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post 432 in Salisbury.

Mr. Shaver was preceded in death by his first wife, Barbara Jean Humphries Shaver, in 1996; a son David C. Shaver Jr.; and sisters Eleanor Matthews and Phyllis Curry.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Ann Briggs Shaver of Salisbury; a brother, Joe G. Shaver of Bonners Ferry, Idaho; daughters Rebecca Shaver of Albany, Western Australia, and Elizabeth Carwile (Alan) of Los Gatos, Calif.; a son, Douglas C. Shaver (Johnnie), of Boise, Idaho; grandchildren Brent (Jennifer) and Craig (Tiffany) Bottolfson, Benjamin, Alyssa, Kari, Alex, Jack and Ellie Carwile and Samuel Shaver; great-grandchildren Taylor, Dillan, Aiden, Halle, Noelle and Colette Bottolfson. Also surviving are stepchildren Debbie Wagner (Leonard), Gwyn Richardson; and step-grandchildren Meghan, Allison, Stephanie and Greyson.

Service: A Graveside service will be conducted Saturday, Feb. 20, at 2 p.m. at Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery, Richfield. Military Honors will be conducted by the Rowan County Veteran's Honor Guard and the N.C. National Guard.

Memorials: May be made to Rowan County Veterans Honor Guard.
