M.C. “Mac” Byrum

SALISBURY -- Mr. M.C. "Mac" Byrum, Sr., 89, of Salisbury, NC died Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004 at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

He was born April 20, 1914 in Chowan County to the late Pastoria Ward Byrum and the late Walter T. Byrum.

He was educated in Chowan County schools and East Carolina University. Mr. Byrum was a retired with the NC Highway Patrol from Feb. 15, 1942 to June 30, 1976. Mr. Byrum was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Whitehead Sunday school class. He was a past president of the Williamston Kiwanis Club in 1958. He received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award from then Gov. Bob Scott. He received the WBTV Jefferson Award, volunteer of the year in 1996 with Rowan Regional Home Health and Hospice. He was a member of the Milford Hills Lions Club, the Lions International Jack Stickley Fellow for Dedicated Humanitarian Service in 1998-99, the Ben Foreman Outstanding Service Award 1978-79. He was Lions District Governor.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rosemond Jackson Byrum, August 11, 1991.

Surviving: wife, Bernice Eagle Misenheimer Byrum of the home; sons, M.C. "Mac" Byrum, Jr. of Denver, James A. Byrum, Sr. of Mooresville; stepson, Frank Misenheimer of Knoxville, TN; brother, John Butler Byrum of Tyner; sister, Regina Bunch of Tyner; five step grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.

Funeral service: 2:00 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Salisbury with Dr. Kenneth Lance, pastor and Rev. Tom Roberts officiating.

Burial: Rowan Memorial Park, Salisbury, with graveside rights by Troop "E" of the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, 2004 at Lyerly Funeral Home, 515 S. Main St., Salisbury, NC.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Salisbury, NC; or N.C. Lions Foundation.
