Baxter Monroe Morgan

ROCKWELL - Mr. Baxter Monroe Morgan, 88 of Rockwell passed away Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011 at his residence.

Born Sept. 5, 1923 in Rowan County, Mr. Morgan was a son of the late James Monroe Morgan and Emma Eagle Morgan. He was a 1941 graduate of Rockwell High School, a lifelong member of Liberty United Methodist Church, where he served on many committees. Mr. Morgan was retired as Vice President of operations after 43 years with Alltel Telephone Company. He joined the United States Navy in February 1943 where he served on the USS Bataan as a 1st Class Electrician until March 1946.

He was a life member of the Rockwell Civitan Club, where he was Civitan of the Year in 1980. He was known as "Mr. Rose" and was a member of the local Rowan Rose Society where he served as president a number of times and was outstanding Judge and outstanding Consulting Rosarian for the Carolina District of the American Rose Society. He was awarded a Gold Medal of Honor of the American Rose Society in 1997, and was Carolina District Director of the American Rose Society.

He was proclaimed Mr. Rose by the Salisbury Post several years after sweeping the awards table at the Annual Rose Shows. Raised on a farm in the Eastern Rowan County he joined the Navy during WWII. During that time at sea he longed for the beauty of the land, promising God that if he survived the war he would do his best to add beauty to the world. When he married and moved to Rockwell, one "Peace" rose was on the property. He took this as a sign and proceeded to develop a garden of 600+ rose bushes, exhibiting in shows across the country, and helping anyone interested in growing roses.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Curtis Eli Morgan and Raymond Morgan, and a sister, Pearl Swicegood.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Doris Russell Morgan, whom he married April 29, 1947; a son, George Russell Morgan and wife Martha of Salisbury; two daughters, Kay Morgan and husband Terry Deese of Newton and Pam Brunell and husband Jeff of Davidson; grandchildren, Danielle Cooney and husband Michael of Denver, Michael Morgan of Denver; great-grandson, Colin Cooney of Denver; and two sisters, Geneva Long of Lexington and Fannie Gaither of Granite Quarry.
