Notes for Jonathan Stoner
Jonathan Stoner’s grave is “50 ft from Bringle Ferry and 50 ft from Scout Rd.” [Mamie Frick Page]

“We do not know the parents of Jonathan or any other member of his family. He made a will, which was broken, and we have the list of items sold at his sale. He was in the Civil War. J. C. Ludwig has items that he used during the war. He made wagons, farmed and seemly wealthy for his time.” Pauline Lentz Frick

"Legend says that Jonathan Stoner came from Tennessee. We believe he left home when a young boy and returned home in 1822. Deeds show that he bought 95 acres of land from the heirs of John Basinger in 1824 and accumulated over 500 acres during his lifetime." Pauline Lentz Frick

John Basinger owned land west of Mathias Frick; there was only one plot separating them. [Kluttz map #6]

The family lived in the Dutch Second Creek settlement. Jonathan was a wheelwright, and his wagons were bought by the government for use in the Civil War. He was a charter member of St Matthews Lutheran Church which was organized in 1838.

Buried at St Matthew’s: Peter Stoner, died 1846; Margaret Stoner, died Mar 12, 1855 aged 57.

The first person buried in St Matthews cemetery was John Stoner in 1838, the year the church was founded.

Jonathan Stoner's will was probated in Apr 1879. Problems arose and his daughter, Eva Ann, was summoned to court since she was out of state. The will was broken and the estate was divided as the court directed.
