Young then studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1879, and established a law practice, while also becoming involved in several business ventures. He served in local offices including City Assessor and Justice of the Peace, and was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives in 1879. From 1886 to 1896 Young served as Marquette County Prosecuting Attorney. In 1902 he was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Republican and served five terms, 1903 to 1913. He appeared to have won reelection in 1912 and took his seat at the beginning of the new term in March, 1913. The results were contested by Young's opponent, William J. MacDonald, and Young resigned in May while the outcome was still pending. In August the House decided in MacDonald's favor, and he completed the remainder of the term. After leaving Congress Young returned to his law practice and business interests, and was President of the Miners' National Bank.
