On 6 Sep 1862 he was conscripted into Company C, 18th NC Infantry, CSA, as a private.
In May 1864 he was taken prisoner during the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse and taken to the prison at Point Lookout, Maryland, and on 3 Aug 1864 to Elmira, NY, from which he was released on 27 Jun 1865.
