DURHAM, N.C. - Former Duke football letterman and assistant coach Doug Knotts passed away last week in Port St. Joe, Fla. He was 77.
A native of Albemarle, N.C., Knotts lettered three seasons as a lineman at Duke under Hall of Fame head coach Bill Murray, helping the Blue Devils to a record of 22-6-3 with three ACC Championships. Following graduation, Knotts served as an assistant football coach at Duke (1956-64), Tennessee (1965-69), Florida (1970-78) and Colorado (1979-81).
Knotts graduated from Duke in 1957 with a degree in sociology. In 1994, he returned to his alma mater where he served as administrative assistant in the football office through the 2000 season. Knotts was inducted into the Stanly (N.C.) County Sports Hall of Fame in 2000.
Born July 29, 1934, Knotts is survived by his wife, Patsy, and two children, John and Katy. Knotts had three brothers earn varsity football letters at Duke - Don (1949-50), Ernie (1943-46) and James (1947-49).
