Notes for Martha Ellen Surratt
Martha Surratt Arey
Martha Surratt Arey, age 89, of Salisbury, NC was welcomed into the arms of Jesus on January 10th, 2021.
She was born on December 12, 1931 in Rowan County, NC to Theodore “Ted” Surratt and Pearl Wyatt Surratt. She married Lonzo Howard Arey on October 21st, 1950. She was a graduate of Rockwell High School.
Martha worked as a telephone operator prior to becoming a homemaker for her four children and caregiver for her grandchildren. She was a devoted wife for over 70 years. She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church for years, and loved her church family. She was a talented pianist and organist who played by ear.
Martha had an infectious, bright smile and the warmest laugh. A true Miss Congeniality, she made friends everywhere she went. She was a brilliant cook, crafter, and decorator, and loved dressing up for any occasion. Her warm embrace could fix any bad day, and she never failed to tell us how proud she was and how much she loved us. As our beloved Momma/MeMaw/Mamaw, she was the biggest champion for our family. She taught us how to have fun, how to laugh at ourselves, and most importantly, how to love deeply and how to show it.
Those left to cherish her memory include her beloved husband “LH”, four children, Debbie (Jim) Dyer, Sandra (Dan) Lesley, Kim (Laura) Arey, and Lisa (Lonnie) Barrier and her brother, Frank (Norma) Surratt. She was adored by her 10 grandchildren, Shelly (Charles) Batts, Jodie (Jason) Cross, Jennifer (Wesley) Smith, Drew Lesley, Justin Lesley, Hunter Barrier, Haley (Nolan) Stehr, Taylor Arey, Preston (Shelby) Lesley, and Logan Arey. She was blessed with 9 great-grandchildren, Ella, Brinley, Callen, Corbin, Mia, August, Sadie, Fletcher, and Judd. She had numerous nieces, nephews, beloved cousin Rachel Safrit, and many forever friends. She is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Don Surratt.
A private memorial service will be held at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church with a celebration of life to occur at a later date. Memorials may be made to St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church Sanctuary Renovation fund.
A special thank you to the staff and nurses at Novant Health Infusion Center, who helped Martha through chronic blood transfusions and became true friends. Martha will forever be our queen and bright light.
