Notes for Hubert Ray West
Hubert West
Another member of The Greatest Generation will be laid to rest on Wednesday, April 8, 2015, in the cemetery of his home church, Greene Memorial United Methodist, Aquadale, NC, following his 4:00 funeral. Hubert Ray West, just 8 days shy of his 89th birthday, of 20251 Union Grove Road, Albemarle, NC, died at home on April 6, 2015. His family will receive friends at the church for one hour prior to his service. Pastor Ron Dry will be officiating.
After graduating from Aquadale High School in 1943, and following his stint in the US Army during World War II, he returned to his native Stanly County and began a lifetime of farming and sawmilling. After he “retired” and turned over his crop farming to his “son” Ronnie Blalock, he and his sister Louise continued to plant bountiful gardens, which were shared with many neighbors, friends, and family.
Mr. West, who was born on April 14, 1926, was preceded in death by his parents, Crowell Marshall and Ethel Thompson West; his brothers Grover, Hampton and Cecil West; his sisters Ruby Kimmer and Eula Burris; and his wife of 64 years, Mildred Moyle West.
He is survived by his sister, Louise West Lowder, his beloved “children”, Ronnie and Leigh Ellen Blalock, his special neighbors/family Ronnie and Susan Blalock, and his daughter, Shelia West Misenheimer (Henry), in whom he instilled a legacy of love for all animals and for all desserts.
He is also survived by a very special and beloved team of caregivers who made his final year of life so much fun! We will long cherish and hold them in our hearts for the angels they were to him and to us: Debbie Springer, Wanda Furr, Judy Moore, Tammy Furr, Jill Dry, Alicia Lowder, and Sheila Morton.
His greatest loves were farming, gardening, his animals, reading, getting mail, figuring math in his head (which served him well in his long tenure as church treasurer), and sharing memories and funny stories with his friends.
For those who wish to honor his life with a memorial, the family respectfully requests that, in lieu of flowers, you please make a donation to your favorite charity, or to Greene Memorial U. Meth. Church, ATTN: Community Coalition for Christ fund, ℅ Fran Scarboro, 10867 Southern Road, Norwood, NC 28128.
Stanly Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements.
