In 1850 Alexander and his family lived on a farm in Iredell County. In 1856 he purchased land near Salisbury in Rowan County and moved his family there. During the Civil War Alexander was a captain of the Home Militia. Sons Stephen and John C. C. died in Union prison camps. Son James Monroe was a guard at the Confederate prison in Salisbury.
After the war Alexander and relatives moved their families near Coffeen in Montgomery County, Illinois, where Alexander bought a farm.
