On 18 Aug 1776 Joseph Hodge is listed as a guard at the jail in Salisbury. He is listed as Joseph Hoges in the 1790 census.
Joseph Hodge filed a land entry on 9 Feb 1785 for 350 acres on both sides of Flat Creek adjoining John Reed and William Lewis. A few years later he obtained state grant #2223 for 343 acres on both sides of Flat Creek adjoining William Lewis, John Reed Sr, and John Reed Jr. He also purchased 200 acres from Jessee Davis.
Joseph Hodge died a widower, sick and low in spirits. His will, dated 20 Nov 1807, was probated in 1808. He left $1 to each of his 9 oldest children (not named) or their heirs. Son George got a Negro woman. Sons Joseph, John, and Jessee each received land, a horse, bridle, and saddle, a cow and calf, and 2 sheep. The remainder of the property was to be sold and divided equally between 4 sons. Exrs: John Reed and George Hodge. Wit: Harris Kimball, John Shaver, and Moses Reed.
