At Lake Providence, Louisiana, on 23 Apr 1863, after 237 desertions, the 109th was disbanded with the officers sacked and the enlisted men assigned to the 11th Illinois with Charles Casper in Company H.

The 11th Illinois had been organized at Cairo 1 Aug 1861. It was mustered out 10 Jul 1865 and discharged at Camp Butler 18 Jul 1865.
